History and Awareness Programs
Students enjoy exploring, sharing, and celebrating their various identities with others through nationally recognized heritage months and awareness days. Across the United States, there are government designated months in which Congress has passed a law officially designating these months to celebrate and commemorate heritages. Programming that occurs during these times honors historical contexts, raises the visibility of communities that exist around the globe, and helps inform students as they become active and engaged citizens.
Below are a few examples of some of the heritage months:
- Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15)
- German American Day (October)
- Italian-American Heritage and Culture Month (October)
- Polish-American Heritage Month (October)
- American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month (November)
- Black (African American) History Month (February)
- Irish American Heritage Month (March)
- Women's History Month (March)
- Arab American Heritage Month (April)
